How to Get an California Insurance License

Do You Qualify for an Insurance License?

See the Following Prerequisites:

  • Be at least 18 years of age or older
  • Have a high school diploma or its equivalent (GED)
  • Possess a Social Security number

1. Complete a Pre-licensing Course

If you would like to sell insurance as an insurance producer in California, you must pass a licensing exam. To prepare for the licensing exam, you must take a state approved insurance course. All courses are cross-referenced with the exam content outline.

In California, 12 hours of Ethics & Code must also be completed for the following lines of insurance:

  • 20 hours – Life Only Agent
  • 20 hours – Accident & Health Agent
  • 40 hours – Life, Accident and Health Agent
  • 40 hours – Property/Casualty Broker-Agent
  • 20 hours – Personal Lines Broker-Agent
  • 20 hours – Limited Line Automobile Agent

Upon the completion of the pre-licensing course, you will be issued a Certificate of Completion to submit to the California Department of Insurance with the license application (certificate is valid for 3 years).

2. Get Fingerprinted

This requirement can be met either before the exam or at the exam site on the day of the exam. There are three options:

  • PSI Exam Sites:  PSI has fingerprint technicians available at exam sites (
  • CA Department of Insurance Exam Sites:  Prior to the licensing exam, you may schedule your fingerprint impressions using CDI’s contracted fingerprint vendor, Accurate Biometrics (866-361-9944 or Remember to bring a completed Live Scan Request, form 442-39A.
  • Department of Justice Vendors:  Another option is to check the Department of Justice (DOJ) for a list of approved Live Scan fingerprinting vendors at

Getting fingerprinted early will expedite the issuance of a license once your exam is passed. This will avoid delays while CDI waits to receive the results from the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Applicants who have a criminal record typically take longer to receive results than applicants who don’t. Any type of criminal violation received during adult years will be listed in the fingerprint results. Failure to disclose any criminal violations may cause a delay or prevent you from obtaining your license.
