How to Get a Montana Real Estate Broker License
General requirements
You must be at least 18 years of age to obtain an real estate license in Montana.You must pass the state exam before applying for licensure.The following information outlines general licensing information. For specific information on filing an application, you will need to obtain the application.
Application
Real estate brokers may be licensed in Montana by four different methods:
Education requirements
- High school graduation or higher
- Sixty hours of additional pre-licensing instruction from a school and instructor approved by the Board
Experience requirements
- Must have two years experience as a licensed salesperson
- Must have completed the following activity criteria within three years of the date of application:
- a) Minimum of 30 residential real estate transactions; or
- b) Minimum of 10 commercial, agricultural or farm & ranch real estate transactions
- One point for each year of real estate brokerage supervisory experience, maximum of three points
- One point for each licensed real estate full time equivalent (FTE) supervised within the last 36 months, maximum of 10 points
- One point for every five transactions supervised within the last 36 months, maximum of 15 points
- One point for each instructor day (maximum of six hours) within the last 36 months, maximum of two points
Exam requirements
Pass the Montana Real Estate Examination with a score of 80% or better on the uniform portion and 70% or better on the state portion.
Reciprocity
Reciprocity agreements are in effect with Alberta, Canada.
Waiver of examination and/or education
An application may be submitted to determine if an applicant has a license in another state or jurisdiction with licensing standards substantially equivalent to Montana’s requirements. The Board may approve to waive all or part of the required pre-licensing education and/or examination.
