How to Get a Florida Mortgage Loan Originator (MLO) License

Requirements and Steps to Get a Florida Mortgage License

Step 1: Obtain your Unique Identification Number with NMLS

  • Create an NMLS account and receive your Unique Identification Number
  • Bring this number to class for completion credit

Step 2: Complete the 20-Hour Florida SAFE Comprehensive Course

  • Pre-Licensure Education: Complete 20 hours of NMLS-approved pre-licensure education, including a minimum of 2 hours covering Florida Law and Rules

Step 3: Pass the SAFE Act Test

  • Take and pass the SAFE Act National Test with Uniform State Test (UST) within 10 days of completing the 20-hour pre-licensing course
  • Score 75% or higher to pass the SAFE Act test
  • Create a Test Enrollment and pay the $110 (fee may vary) fee for the National Test with UST
  • Schedule your test with Prometric Testing Centers

Step 4: Application

  • Submit the MU4 Application (Uniform Individual Mortgage License/Registration & Consent Form) on the NMLS website
  • Pay a $195 (fee may vary) nonrefundable application fee, a $20 (fee may vary) nonrefundable Mortgage Guaranty Trust Fund fee, and a $60 (fee may vary) NMLS processing fee
  • Authorize a credit report for $15 (fee may vary) and submit it with your MU4 Application
  • Submit fingerprints and Criminal Background Check (CBC) for approximately $36.25 (fee may vary) through an NMLS-authorized fingerprint vendor
  • Obtain Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) fingerprints for approximately $33 (fee may vary) through PearsonVUE

Step 5: View your Application Status

  • Check the status of your CBC request or retrieve a copy of your CBC Certificate
  • View the status of your MU4 Application and review any deficiencies set by your state regulator
