How to Get a Vermont Mortgage Loan Originator (MLO) License

Vermont Mortgage License Requirements

  • Complete a Criminal Background Check (CBC)
  • Authorize a credit report through the NMLS
  • Fulfill all state and federal education requirements as designated by your state agency
  • Take and pass a National Test
  • Be employed (W2) and sponsored by a company licensed as a lender, mortgage broker, and/or loan servicer by the State of Vermont (dual sponsorship is not permitted)
  • Be licensed and in good standing in the state of residence

Steps to Get a Vermont Mortgage License

  1. Obtain an NMLS Unique Identifier: Register for an account on statemortgageregistry.com and request a unique identifier number.
  2. Criminal Background Check: Authorize a Federal (FBI) and state criminal background check through NMLS.
  3. Pre-License Education Requirements: Complete the 20 hours of NMLS-approved education, including federal law, ethics, non-traditional mortgage lending, and Vermont state-specific education.
  4. Pass the National Test: Take and pass the SAFE Act National Test with Uniform State Test (UST). A score of 75% or better is required to pass.
  5. Employment and Sponsorship: Secure employment and sponsorship by a company licensed as a lender, mortgage broker, and/or loan servicer by the State of Vermont.
